About Us
Experience Aikido in Kyoto

History of Our Dojo

Our Aikido dojo has a long and respected history in Kyoto. Its roots date back to 1959, when Tanaka Bansen Shihan, a direct student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba, began teaching Aikido in Kyoto. Prior to this, Tanaka Shihan had established an Aikido dojo in Osaka in 1951, which later developed into what is now known as the Osaka Aikikai Foundation.

Today, our training takes place at the Kyoto City Budo Center, located near Heian Shrine in a historically rich and tranquil area of Kyoto. This public martial arts facility has long been associated with the preservation and practice of traditional Japanese martial arts, making it a unique environment in which to study Aikido in the heart of Kyoto.

Our dojo welcomes everyone—beginners, experienced martial artists, and visitors from around the world. Whether you are interested in Japanese culture or seeking an authentic Aikido experience in Kyoto, you are warmly invited to train with us.

Regular Aikido practice is held every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. In addition to daily training, we actively participate in demonstrations, cultural events, and joint practices with other dojos and university Aikido clubs, including Kyoto University. Through Aikido, we value building connections and sharing the spirit of harmony.

Tanaka Bansen Shihan

Tanaka Bansen Shihan, born in Osaka in 1912, was one of the early pioneers of Aikido in Japan. In 1936, he met Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, an encounter that inspired him to devote his life to the study and teaching of the art.

In 1951, Tanaka Shihan trained at the renowned Iwama Aiki Training Dojo, a key center for traditional Aikido practice under the founder. That same year, he established his own Aikido dojo near Takahama Shrine in Suita City, Osaka, laying the foundation for the spread of Aikido in the Kansai region.

In 1952, he officially founded the Osaka Branch Dojo of the Aikikai Foundation, which later received formal recognition as the Osaka Aikikai in 1971. Throughout his life, Tanaka Shihan dedicated himself to the promotion of Aikido, sharing its techniques and philosophy with countless students in Japan and abroad.

Osaka Aikikai Foundation

In cooperation with the Aikikai Headquarters in Tokyo, the Osaka Aikikai Foundation plays an active role in promoting Aikido throughout the Kansai region of Japan, including Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Nara.

Guided by the vision of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba and Tanaka Bansen Shihan, the foundation is committed to supporting the physical and mental growth of individuals through Aikido and to contributing to the development of a peaceful and harmonious society.

In addition to regular Aikido practice at its dojos, the foundation organizes demonstrations, seminars, and other cultural events. It also provides instruction at many branch dojos and university Aikido clubs, helping to spread traditional Aikido and its values to new generations.
