Experience Aikido in Kyoto
History of Our Dojo
Our Aikido dojo has a long history in Kyoto. It all began in 1959, when Tanaka Bansen Shihan, a direct student of Aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba, opened a dojo Kyoto. Tanaka Shihan first established his Aikido dojo in Osaka in 1951, which later became known as the Osaka Aikikai Foundation.
Today, we practice Aikido inside the historic Kyoto City Budo Center, a place deeply connected to Japan’s martial arts tradition near Heian Shrine. This is a special place where you can experience the spirit of Japanese martial arts in the heart of Kyoto.
Our dojo welcomes everyone — beginners, experienced martial artists, and visitors from around the world. If you are interested in Japanese culture or looking for an authentic Aikido experience in Kyoto, please feel free to join us.
We hold regular Aikido training every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. We also take part in demonstrations, cultural events, and joint practices with other dojos and university Aikido clubs, such as Kyoto University. Through Aikido, we enjoy making new connections and sharing the spirit of harmony.
Tanaka Bansen Shihan
Tanaka Bansen Shihan, born in Osaka in 1912, was one of the early pioneers of Aikido in Japan. In 1936, he met Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, and was deeply inspired to begin his lifelong martial arts journey.
In 1951, Tanaka Shihan trained at the famous Iwama Aiki Training Dojo, known as a key place for learning traditional Aikido under the founder. That same year, he established his own Aikido dojo near Takahama Shrine in Suita City, Osaka. This dojo later became the foundation for spreading Aikido in Osaka and beyond.
In 1952, he officially founded the Osaka Branch Dojo of the Aikikai Foundation. After many years of dedication, this dojo received formal recognition as the Osaka Aikikai in 1971. Master Tanaka devoted his life to promoting Aikido, sharing its philosophy and techniques with countless students in Japan and around the world.
Osaka Aikikai Foundation
In cooperation with the Aikikai Headquarters in Tokyo, the Osaka Aikikai Foundation plays an active role in promoting Aikido throughout the Kansai region of Japan, including Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Nara.
Guided by the vision of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba and Master Bansen Tanaka, the foundation is committed to using Aikido to support the physical and mental growth of individuals and to contribute to building a peaceful society.
In addition to regular Aikido practice at its dojos, the foundation organizes demonstrations, seminars, and other cultural events. It also provides instruction at many branch dojos and university Aikido clubs, helping to spread traditional Aikido and its values to new generations.
